Roosevelt contacted the artist who had created his 1905 inauguration medallion, the famed sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens. The president asked the aging sculptor to produce a new series of coins. For a fee of $5,000, Saint-Gaudens agreed to produce a variety of coins similar to the ancient Greek coins which Roosevelt admired.

Unfortunately, Saint-Gaudens passed away after completing only two coins, the $10 Eagle and the $20 Double Eagle, but these two coins are considered the most illustrious coin designs in American history. President Roosevelt sought to continue his pet project so he tracked down one of Saint-Gaudens' students, Bela Lyon Pratt, whom he commissioned to redesign the $2.50 Quarter Eagle and the $5 Half Eagle.

These classic American gold coins--the Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagle, the Indian $10 Eagle, the Indian $5 Half Eagle and the Indian $2.50 Quarter Eagle--make up the four piece United States Gold Indian Set, one of the most popular collectible investments in existence.
